KATSUJI WAKISAKA HISTORY
Katsuji was trained at the Kyoto School of Art & Design. Katsuji was offered a position in 1968 to work for a Finland design company. He was one of the two Japanese Textile artist that were invited over to Finland to work for the design company Marimekko.
Katsuji introduced new aesthetics which expending Marimekko style. Katsuji Wakisaka was 24 when he started working for the Finnish company and continued working there for another 8 years.
Katsuji Wakisaka is famously known for creating the Bo Boo print, this print is a condensed and flattened style of cartoon-like graphics.
By introducing the Bo Boo print and new playful prints for living rooms and nursery's, Katusji contributions gave Marimekko a new character on life. With the large amount of primary colours being used added a whimsical aspect but also a reaffirmed the mod tradition that Marimekko established. Katsuji Wakisaka added a slice of fun and boldness to the company.
Since the creation and success of the the Bo Boo print, cartoon-like graphics and bold colours became his signature style.
